Pushing and pulling
How versions move between your computer and StemHaus, and what happens when two people change the same project.
Push
Push saves everything in your project’s folder as a new version. Plugins and other programs are
never uploaded. Files of these kinds are left out, and the app tells you which ones it skipped:
.exe, .dll, .msi, .app, .pkg, .dmg, .vst, .vst3, .component, .aaxplugin, .clap,
.dylib, .bat, .ps1 and .sh.
StemHaus lists the plugins a project uses in Inside this version, so a collaborator knows what to install themselves.
Pull
Pull brings your folder up to date with the latest version. When it finishes you see a summary such as Pulled: 3 updated, 1 removed, 40 already current.
If someone pushes while you have the project open, a banner tells you who pushed and what they wrote, with a Pull update button. You do not need to refresh anything.
Your own edits are safe
A pull never overwrites work you have not pushed.
- A file you changed here is kept. If you edited a file since your last sync and nobody else touched it, it stays as it is, and the summary says Kept your edits to and lists it.
- A file changed in both places stops the pull. You see Not pulled. These files were changed here and online, with the file names, and nothing is written.
- A damaged download changes nothing. If a piece arrives damaged, your folder is left exactly as it was.
StemHaus does not merge two edits of the same file for you. Today, when a pull stops on a conflict, the way forward is to push your version, which is saved next to theirs (see below), and agree with your collaborator which one to keep.
When two people push
If someone else has pushed since you last pulled, your push does not replace theirs. It is saved on a branch of its own, named after you, and the app says It went to a new branch, … because someone else pushed first. Both versions stay in the history, and branches are marked with a branch tag.
Coming: pulling an older version back into your folder. You can already select any version in History and look at what it contained.
Habits that help
- Save in your DAW, then push. Do not edit while a push is running.
- Write a short note. Final drums, new bridge is worth more than a date.
- Pull before you start a session, and push when you finish.
